Farrar Foundation

Farrar Foundation is a new UK registered charity that helps young people in Vietnam & Nepal. The brand is built around pillars of positivity, empathy, and empowerment, rather than neediness.

The arch, created from two 'F's was considered an appropriate metaphor for 'a way in' to science, education & sport, rather than 'a way out' of hardship. The branding system uses a series of icons, created from the deconstructed brand mark with a touch of added imperfection. www.farrarfoundation.org

STC is the world’s 5th largest telecoms (they own Maxis in Malaysia and Indonesia) For the past year I have been part of a team of more 20 creatives and strategists delivering everything from single ideas to entire campaigns for the VIVA brand. Shown here is a small selection of the output. After just one year, VIVA is now Bahrain’s second largest Telecoms provider.

Vietnamese folklore tells us that a benevolent dragon resides in each of the nine mouths of the Mekong River. It is in the hillock areas of these fertile Delta lands that the unique strain of dragon blood rice grows full and lush.

The rice is Eco friendly and Fair Trade. Furthermore husking, sifting and packaging are done by local villagers creating additional employment. It is also healthier Rice; during the husking process, the bran layer is only partly removed, as it is within the bran layer that the majority of beneficial nutrients are stored.

The simple design balances with the traditional illustration (by the brilliant Andrew Denholm) which uses the Mekong river to weave the journey of rice as it is grown, harvested, transported and sold. Mekong Red Dragon Rice is available to buy in supermarkets in Vietnam from April 2010. It will also available online at www.xanhshop.com.

Heritage Line operate enchanting luxury cruises in Halong Bay or Vinh Ha Long in Vietnamese– which literally translates as Descending Dragon Bay. This poster celebrates the famous location in the Year of the Dragon.

Duck Rice

Packaging work for Xanh (meaning green in Vietnamese), Duck Rice is their first product. Very simply, rice is grown as naturally as possible, the ducks live in the paddies and their everyday habits keep the crop fertilized and free of pests. Xanh also promote a fairer deal for farmers. The clean fresh packaging echos the philosophy of the product. A wonderful coincidence allowed me give them a duck in the typography.

Duck Rice was featured on the CR feed, lovelypackage.com, thedieline.com and given 5 stars on packagingoftheworld.com. It is to be featured in a new book Green Graphics by Index books. It was awarded the prestigious design of the day (25.05.10) on designanddesign.com and will feature in their book of the 2010.

Rebranding Edge

This branding works simply by a rule that one always uses an edge - not only illustrating the literal meaning of the word but also going someway to articulating the agency vision. Part of the challenge was also to ensure each division of edge is clearly defined and yet has common ground. The coloured lights are a physical representation of 5 key strengths of the agency. Rather than using 3d renderings we opted for the imperfect and actually had the lights made in neon.

Wildlife At Risk

The animals at the Wildlife Rescue Centre are often taken from horrendous situations. The centre rehabilitates them aiming to place them back in the wild. Unfortunately this isn't always possible. The WAR team work in very trying circumstances, the problems are multifaceted and come from every level imaginable. Every tourist that visits raises awareness of the problems. Every t-shirt and bottle of water sold helps develop the centre.

This work will be featured in a new book Green Graphics by Index Books and was shown on the CR Feed.

Divine Olives

The packaging for these yummy handmade treats reflects the peaceful rolling hills, pure skies, and timeless Olive groves from which they originate. Heavenly? Definitely. The Terra Cotta cruet that contains these Divine Olives has a hundred-and-one-uses and like the label, string, cork lid, wooden beads and wax seal; will biodegrade. The terrific and talented Lydia Leith made the illustration come to life. The words come from the great John Archer.

The first of it's kind in Vietnam, Sanctuary is an elegant oceanfront resort just hours from the hurly-burly of Ho Chi Minh City. I was responsible for capturing the tranquility of the location with the modernity of the architecture in the identity, stationery, brochure and web presence.

Brand Cambodia

Working with the International Finance Corporation (World Bank) and the Cambodian Ministry Of Tourism. I was part of the team that won a 7 way regional pitch to develop an identity for the developing country with incredible assets. The brief was 'more than Angkor'. I approached it as 'identity not identical' and produced a series of 9 logos forming the identity, each representing a different unique aspect of the country whilst using the same visual language. With the absence of a major advertising budget it was important that these be powerful when alone.

This work was featured in a TV spot supported by CNN and also featured on creativeroots.org

Counterfeit product is a problem for this brand in Vietnam. Stores that are monitored and tested display this seal of approval which uses familiar JW branding elements. The branding was rolled out across print collateral to inform On-trade,off-license owners, and consumers to buy with confidence.

From 2005-2007. I was part of the team that launched Baileys in Vietnam. The first alcoholic drink to be aimed solely at Women in the country. We designed a chill-out room at local cafe and sampled using a bus at supermarkets. We used Direct Marketing and sent Strategic sales tools to outlet owners. We also ran promotions around Women’s day and designed a set of Limited Edition glasses.

Results

Bailey’s is an established drink for high earning females in Vietnam. The work we did was remarkably affective given the small budget.

Just for fun. This personal project started as a Reindeer I illustrated for a Christmas card. Another more religious card was made the next year and a Vietnamese snowman the following year. I then did a whole series that were made into rubber stamps for kids and some mounted nursery pictures.

The challenge

For four years much of my time was spent working on Club Journey for Johnnie Walker. The briefs varied from Formula 1, building brand equity, sales promotions, new product launches and campaigns. Solutions were centred around the brand idea of personal progress.

Look closely

Because of ‘Dark Market’ restrictions in Vietnam we often had to use branding elements without using registered trade marks.

Results

edge-asia built a database of over 200,000 Whisky drinkers in Vietnam, won a Diageo Asian Hero award and retained the Johnnie Walker account for six years. Shown here is a selection of the work.
